The Final’s Weekend – what a couple of days

Well, another fantastic Finals Weekend!

It kicked off early on Saturday morning with two thrilling 3 set finals – the Mixed Handicap Doubles and the Men’s Singles Plate. Jo and John Nicholls beat Jen Morris and Paul Constable 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 and Martin beat Gavin in the Singles Plate 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 – both matches were strongly fought right to the very end.

Next up was the Mixed Doubles with Nikki and Will nearly taking Sarah and Mark to a third set! Sarah and Mark Nash managed to hold on to their lead though, winning 6-3, 7-5.

Paula and Jo managed to defeat Donna and Jenny Fowers in two straight sets to take the title for the Ladies’ Doubles with a 6-1, 6-4 win.

Next up were the Men’s Vets Doubles and the Ladies’ Vets Doubles – both exciting matches. Mark Feeley and Nigel Ware manged to defeat Martin and Ray in two very tough sets, eventually winning 7-5, 7-6.

On court 3, Donna and Elayne were battling it out with Jo and Tracey, with Donna and Elayne improving as the match progressed to come through with a win of 6-7, 6-1, 6-0.

Then on court 2 the Men’s Doubles was another tightly fought match with Christian and Charlie managing to beat the Nash brothers in two straight sets 6-4, 6-2.

Unfortunately, Vernon and Sarah were unable to play the Vets Mixed Final against Jenny and Paul Gibson due to an earlier injury sustained by Vernon – we hope he gets better quickly.

The day was rounded off with a 6-1, 6-4 win by Jo and Oscar against Donna and Gavin to take the Family Mixed Doubles Title.

Not finalists, helpers.

Sunday looked to be an exciting day too, but we had no idea just how exciting it would turn out to be! It began with the Ladies’ Singles on court two between Christina and Nikki. This was absolutely fantastic with both players producing shots that beggared belief!

Christina won the first set 6-3 but the second set went to a tie-break with Christina eventually pulling through at 7-6. What a game!

Meanwhile on court three there was a battle going on between Paul Gibson and Martin Hastings for the Men’s Vets Singles title. Paul took the first set 6-4 but Martin fought back to take the second set 6-1! The third set was a real nail-biter with Paul eventually winning 6-3.

We all thought it couldn’t get any better. BUT then came the Men’s Singles Final!! This was the most enthralling match with shots that broke the sound barrier they were so fast!! With unbelievable shots Mark Nash and Rob Heaton proceeded to thrill all spectators with their amazing tennis skills. Mark took an early lead in the first set to win 6-3. But Rob fought back strongly in the second set to take it 6-1. The third set was an edge-of-the-seat thriller getting to 4 all – it could still go either way. But Mark held on to win the next two games and take the Men’s Singles Title yet again with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 overall win. What a fantastic match!

Spectators were well behaved

The whole weekend was thrilling and exciting. The weather was kind to us and the rain stayed away. Thanks must go to all the people who helped, but the list is too long to mention here as everyone seemed to be helping throughout the weekend. What a wonderful club! Thank you to all members who supported the Tournament – roll on next year!!!!
